New Zealand vs England: Day two of second Test in a nutshell
Watling second only to Gilchrist, Bumbles name problems and whats wrong with Archer – that the notables in the day two in Seddon Park…
SCORECARD | HOW IT HAPPENED
Stuart Broad maintained 4-73 as England belatedly fought back to dismiss New Zealand for 375 on day two of the must-win second Exam before sinking to 39-2 by stumps following a jittery end to the evening.
The Black Caps have been 315-5 one ball before tea, only for Broads dismissal of both BJ Watling (55) with a delivery that lifted off the surface to finish a stubborn stand of 124 using debutant Daryl Mitchell (73) and rally a formerly toiling England in Seddon Park at Hamilton.
Broad eliminated Mitchell upon the restart, shortly after receiving another warning for running onto the pitch, even before Chris Woakes (3-73), Sam Curran (2-63), and Jofra Archer (1-75) polished off the innings.
Englands momentum has been shortly dented, however, together with Dom Sibley (4) and Joe Denly (4) falling cheaply but it might have been even worse for the visitors with Rory Burns (24no) dropped 10 from Ross Taylor at slide and then on 19 from Jeet Raval in midwicket.
It was going to have something special to eliminate the in-form Watling and so it was using the batsmans gritty innings simply coming to an end when Broad obtained a ball to lift prodigiously off the pitch then fly off the bat into a thankful Rory Burns at gully.
Elsewhere, Mitchells debut fifty was brought up having a fantastic pull for four off Ben Stokes – the moment made all the more memorable with his mommy celebrating in the crowd – although Tom Latham shouldering arms to a extensive ball early in the day and being bowled was difficult to forget, even if the New Zealand centuriond like to do just that!
Adam Gilchrist includes a higher batting average than BJ Watling among Test wicketkeepers and dismissals.
Why are we not seeing with the Jofra Archer that steamed in and felled Steve Smith in Lord? Its down to exhaustion and not a mindset issue, based on Sky Sports Crickets Mark Butcher.
There have been charms where he has cranked it up but hes appeared like he is either nursing himself or saving himself or just tender, said the former England batsman.
Just because he has this silky-smooth activity that looks like it is not taking anything out of him doesnt indicate these marathon charms are not accepting their toll and he can continue going to the well and generating the eye-catching stuff we would like to see
Archer delivered a whopping 42 overs at Mount Maunganui – along with driving to a Segway – and – chalked 28 up in the first innings in Hamilton. Of course hes knackered.
People might say his own entire body language isnt this, that or the other but he looks exhausted, added Butcher.
Lets not forget that he bowled in the World Cup last and for a lot of the Ashes having a side harm and intercostal injuries can continue to keep these boys outside for weeks on end. He doesnt look 100 per cent and is becoming through more overs than anyone else.
Stuart Broad around the condition of the sport:We are disappointed to get rid of these two wickets but it was some good bowling. We are fairly happy becoming those seven wickets, I think that the pitch is playing correct. On this 700-6 was got by them so 300 below par, the last time New Zealand batted In memory! So we are fairly satisfied with that.
It moves through small phases on pitches such as this where you are able to be out of the game for a bowler and not feel overly threatening and youve got to restrain the scoring pace. Then there are instances youve got to hit and take wickets and where you are feeling in the sport. We needed to settle in and took wickets later on by being rather aggressive.
Mark Butcher on New Zealand debutant Daryl Mitchell:He looks to be very organised. He reminds me a great deal of Kane Williamson in the way he sets up, the flourish of his back-lift and the control of the bat encounter .
Watch day three of the second Test between New Zealand and England in 9.30pm on Saturday on Sky Sports Cricket (channel 404).
