CONOR MCGREGOR TWEETS THAT HE HAS RETIRED FROM MMA
When most people were sleeping, former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor put a tweet out stating that he’s retired from MMA. Below is the quote from his tweet:
“Hey guys quick announcement, I have decided to retire from the game officially called”Mixed Martial Art” today. I wish all my older colleagues well going forward in contest. I join my former partners on this venture, currently. Suitable Pina Coladas on me fellas!”
At first glance, it is hard to choose McGregor seriously. In the end, this is not the first time he has said he’s retired from MMA. The other time he tweeted something similar after he was submitted by Nate Diaz at a shocker at UFC 196. Only a few months after tweeting he was back at the cage, winning a vast majority decision over Diaz in UFC 202. So if McGregor tweets something about retiring from MMA, you have to keep in mind he has pulled this stunt before.
At second glance, though, there might be something more to this. In the end, McGregor doesn’t need MMA anymore. It is only a matter of whether or not he has that burning passion to step into the cage, as far as finances go, he’s set for life. The Floyd Mayweather boxing superfight in 2017 made McGregor up of $100 million, and that financial windfall help set him up for success with Proper 12 whiskey. McGregor doesn’t really truly”need” MMA anymore. However he is a competitor, and he probably doesn’t want to go out on a devastating submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in his last bout, and of course all the shenanigans that went along with it.
This could be a tactic by McGregor, if anything. It is smart for McGregor to get the attention of MMA fans and media. He has not even fought in nearly a year and yet remains talked about more than almost any other fighter. He’s clearly a very wise guy. The UFC has had discussions with McGregor about returning at UFC 239 in a co-main event fight against Nate Diaz, but McGregor has been adamant he would like to fight in the main event, and it seems that is in the crux of his own beef with UFC president Dana White and co.. This could all be McGregor posturing and trying to acquire the UFC to call his bluff, but it remains to be seen.
Without McGregor, the UFC will have to proceed and book UFC 239 without him as a possible fight. The rumors are that the UFC would like to do Daniel Cormier from Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title in the main event, and there are lots of different options for your card including Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington for the UFC welterweight title. Just as the fans want to view McGregor return and fight someone like Diaz, as far as it seems like the promotion demands McGregor, they truly don’t, along with the UFC’s well-oiled machine will continue to move forwards with or without the Irish superstar.
