The late hitting of jos Buttler went some way towards rescuing England after a familiarly batting performance on the day of the final Ashes Test at The Oval against Australia.
Buttler crunched on three sixes in his own 64 out not to take England to 271-8 within an unbroken stand of 45.
The home side had dropped five wickets on slip out of 170-3 into 226-8.
That position could have been worse because England had Joe Root, who made 57, maybe not been dropped three occasions, while an lbw decision overturned on the way.
Australia captain Tim Paine’s decision to field first after winning the toss looked like backfiring, If they had been together.
The tourists were awarded the ascendancy from 4-35 by Mitchell Marsh, just to launch his sensational counter-attack.
After all, there was also not the impression which England are short of par on what seems to be a real batting surface, however they’ve been kept in the game by Buttler.
Along with however that would require England to first find a way to discount the prolific Steve Smith the pitch may dry out enough for a fourth-innings pursuit to be catchy for Australia, then post a target.
There were times when this day had an end-of-term atmosphere with Australia having retained the Ashes, and both sides showed signs of limping towards an intense summer’s end.
The decision matched the shock of Paine preferring to field due to a green tinge to the pitch to omit Mitchell Starc in favour of pace bowler Peter Siddle. There were times when both calls appeared like mistakes.
Catches went batting conditions were ideal, , Siddle was the lacklustre of their bowlers and, since the sunlight shone in the day.
However, the temptation, their inability to occupy the crease, not throw wickets away of England, supposed they weren’t able to take full advantage.
And as Australia enhanced, they shot the upper hand thanks to the presents from a variety of England’s batsmen along with a blend of Marsh’s bowling.
Then came Buttler, who switched into mode with a few striking. Even with every fielder on the boundary, he could not be contained by Australia to the joy of a previously Oval.
England had Paine when Root and Burns added 76 for the second wicket to be punished by a true chance either side of lunch.
Burns scored his toes and through the covers. Root, following a challenging series, was ready himself on to foot.
He had been set down at long leg 24 and by wicketkeeper Paine on 25, both off Cummins by slide Smith away Siddle on 30.
When Burns shovelled a pull into mid-on at Josh Hazlewood they were parted, but it was.
The skipper has attracted deliveries this one which nipped away to choose the bail from Pat Cummins and all show was just another beauty, albeit Root was in no position to play with it.
Buttler saw the majority of the meltdown in the end, but ultimately found a ready ally in Leach, that supported Ben Stokes at Headingley and survived for an hour England fought to conserve the fourth Evaluation.
Buttler had performed pushes are covered by some sumptuous even before he upped the ante, nevertheless successive handsome straight sixes off Hazlewood plus a meaty blow across the leg-side rope overshadowed them away from exactly the man.
There were times when he shielded Leach but 10 had confronted 31 deliveries such as fending off the ball.
Support the Australia pace attack and all-rounder Marsh came in for batsman Travis Head to play with his first Test since December.
There were times when he outshone the rest of the bowlers by glancing the ball on a full length.
He had Stokes miscue a tug afterward, after Root fell, was the architect of England’s collapse.
Both Chris Woakes along with Jonny Bairstow played across inswingers to be lbw either side of Sam Curran, who had already survived being leg-before to some Cummins no-ball.
Into his own 16th over, and as Buttler was starting to defraud, Marsh pulled upward with cramp and had to depart the field.
He returned and managed one over, but by that point, Buttler was in to his stride that was clean-hitting.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan:”England must have been on course for 400 to at least put some scoreboard pressure on Steve Smith.
“A mixture of a lack of application, bad thinking and a few decent bowling methods England have dropped.
“Australia will be delighted with this place given they actually had a bad day.”
England’s Jos Buttler, speaking to TMS:”It is wonderful to contribute a bit. The boys really well in the daytime and we put ourselves into a position that was wonderful but couldn’t capitalise.
“Batting has been hard work and not enjoyable this series, and so I wanted to take the shackles off and perform with a grin on my face”
Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, speaking to Sky Sports:”I was like a kid at Christmas this afternoon. It is sometimes a tour whenever you are not playing. I wanted to attempt to find an opportunity at some stage and it was nice today to make.
“The ball came out pretty well. I just wanted to come in today and take a few wickets.”
