Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says that he never doubted following the Brazilian’s solid screen in the 3-0 triumph at Shakhtar Donetsk, that Fernandinho will be comfortable playing in a back four.
Injuries to Aymeric Laporte and John Stones have abandoned City with just 1 fit centre-back at Nicolas Otamendi.
However, midfielder Fernandinho seemed natural that in Ukraine and has been training this season.
“That’s why he’s so important for people,” explained Guardiola.
“We don’t have many options. I believe he is the only one I’ve [at centre-back]. Players may perform in that place but Fernandinho is a player intelligent – an incredible guy.
“He did well the first match he played [this year ]. Of course he’s got a lot of experience and character, and what he says that the folks accompany him from the locker room so it’s critical.”
“I didn’t have doubts that he would [look so comfortable in the back four].”
It was a quiet night for the defence of City as a portion of a screen in the Champions League Group C opener.
City scored in the first half with Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez both – before the win was secured by Gabriel Jesus in 2 games against Shakhtar after the break with his fourth strike.
Having played with Shakhtar in the group phase of all of the three Champions League contests, City have a record of four wins and one defeat.
2 interceptions, a passing precision of 90% left for a quietly effective night for Fernandinho along with two strong headers.
“Pep knows about our team and team and when he wants [us], each player ought to be ready,” he advised BT Sport. “Today was my time and chance and I hope I can get better and improve a little bit more.”
“It was a quiet night [for the defence]. I believe the team made an excellent game beginning with the guys up front, who shut the spaces.
“At the back it was a bit simpler for us. However, for sure we played now for a group and we all deserved the result – we had been much better and we made a lot of opportunities and conceded few chances to them”
Guardiola was delighted with an outcome that has been the best riposte to their shock 3-2 Premier League loss at Norwich and puts them up to push qualification to the last 16 and the screen.
“We saw that the results yesterday and now , we know how difficult the Champions League is. We defended very well and we made chances,” said the Spaniard.
“To start with three things off is indeed important, it’s in our hands to reach the last 16.
“When you win the supervisor makes the perfect decisions, when you drop the incorrect decisions. We dropped one match in eight months and we’re not going to doubt that these players will be. It is a joy to be their supervisor.”
