Culled from an even longer mubi…All the films listed in the B.F.I. At 42 minutes when Justine slips out of the brothel room, she goes upstairs and meets Lord Carlisle also going upstairs to the brothel room.
Meanwhile, her brazen, flirtatious and liberated sister Juliette ironically receives nothing but happiness and reward for her wanton behavior.
The cinematography is well above the standard we expect for this type of film. Not a bad adaptation of “Justine,” I guess (though it takes huge liberties with the plot) and the performances are mostly fine.
Jess Francos adaptation is a lot better... and that's a really sad thing to say about a movie.Justine with 1/2 the cruelty, 1/3 of the nudity, and none of the philosophy.tbf this was made using sade's material, but the lack of subtitles and general horribleness doesn't exactly help. Culture. Along the lines of a Lifetime movie, but with a dash of nunsploitation, a few somewhat gory murders and I will say it has the most excellently cynical and nihilistic ending it could have had. Starting from the bottom usually means slogging to the middle, but I have to say Deakins definitely starts off with gloves laced up even if he isn't coming out swinging. First time director Boger admits in his interview accompanying Redemption's new special edition DVD of the film … Drama. Unfortunately, any social commentary brought up by the content is handled by a director who's about as deft with social commentary as Todd Phillips or Zach Snyder. there are a lot better adaptations of sade's stuff.Nunsploitation that morphs into some pretty brutal De Sadean farce, and with an ending so downbeat that I think it would please Paul Schrader. Cute girl, somewhat shocking for its' time.
This films lends itself to confirmation bias as its easy to ascribe any success to Deakins or the Marquis De Sade's original story. After some horizon broadening viewings of LGBTQ cinema…I have never read Justine, but other than being tamer kinkwise than I expected, this feels very Sadian to me. Inhaltsangabe: Im England des späten 18. It's a twisted tale of strange desires, perverse pleasures and the ultimate corruption of innocence as told by the Marquis de Sade. Excellent. listed alphabetically, as they are on…Notable and not-so-notable BDSM themed movies.
The somewhat involving story follows two sisters from convent to brothel and back after the deaths of their parents, and the film is well-shot, delivering the lush greens and crumbly grays of its English locales. The film swings from drama to comedy to drama again as nuns, madames, and highwaymen are thrown into the mix; and the entire affair is almost entertaining in its near-delightful depravity. The list is sorted chronologically from newer to older.A watchlist I've accumulated over the past decade on my search for hidden gems. Justine: The Misfortunes of Virtue (aka Cruel Passion, 1977) is a curious low-budget film, an attempt to straddle the two genres which the poverty-stricken British film industry of the 1970’s seemed hamstrung to produce: highbrow literary adaptations and lowbrow exploitation. I only wish we got some bare dicks to go with all the nude ladies..This is ridiculous, utter trash, so, pretty much what I'm in the mood for today. But it doesn’t do justice to de Sade’s radical atheism (which is such an important part of the book).
Título original: Cruel Passion. Saw this on video under the title "Justine" which was the original story title.Ava DuVernay’s Array Acquires Slamdance Winner ‘Residue’
I only wish we got some bare dicks to go with all the nude ladies..This is ridiculous, utter trash, so, pretty much what I'm in the mood for today. I also think there is something to the whole theme of how much worse life is when one tries so hard for purity. By fim's end though, the film is bruised by unfinished character arcs and a tone that turns downright cruel, diminshing the moments of wicked fun.So I got a hair in my butt to deep dive on some Roger Deakins.
The world is too impure, and life is too short. Early Roger Deakins. Not memorable in the slightest but reasonably competent for its age/genre.A pitiful adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's Justine (and other writings) by Ian Cullen that decides to make up its own route for Justine and Juliette to follow by combining and reinterpreting circumstances from the novel at its own leisure... Chris Boger's direction is passable, and Koo Stark and Lydia Lisle are good in their roles, but as a book-to-film adaptation it fails miserably...Jess Francos adaptation is a lot better... and that's a really sad thing to say about a movie. With progressive commentary on religion and the human condition, "Cruel Passion" (aka "Justine") stands apart from its exploitative brethren as a film with something to say.
